Electroacupuncture FAQs
-
Electroacupuncture (also called e-stim) is a modern enhancement of traditional acupuncture. After the needles are placed, gentle electrical currents are passed between specific points. This provides a steady, consistent stimulation that helps regulate the nervous system, relieve pain, and support healing. The sensation feels like a soft tapping or pulsing—comfortable, not painful.
-
Electroacupuncture reduces pain in several ways. It triggers the release of the body’s own pain-relieving chemicals—endorphins and enkephalins—and helps block pain signals from reaching the brain. It also activates pathways that calm the nervous system and reduce inflammation. From a Chinese medicine perspective, electroacupuncture helps move Qi and Blood, clearing stagnation and restoring balance to the channels.
-
Motor points are specific locations where a motor nerve enters a muscle. Stimulating these points with electroacupuncture helps the muscle release tension, reset its resting tone, and restore healthy function. This is especially useful for muscle knots, chronic tightness, or postural imbalances. Many patients feel immediate improvement in range of motion and comfort after treatment.
-
You’ll feel a mild pulsing or rhythmic tapping sensation at the needle site. The current is gentle and adjustable—comfortable enough that most people relax deeply or even fall asleep during treatment.
-
Yes. Electroacupuncture uses low-frequency, medical-grade current and sterile, single-use needles. It’s a safe, effective, and drug-free therapy when performed by a licensed practitioner.
-
It’s often used for pain relief, muscle tension, nerve pain, inflammation, and stress-related conditions. It may also support recovery from injuries or chronic pain syndromes by improving circulation and modulating the nervous system.
-
While electroacupuncture is generally safe, it may not be suitable for everyone. You should avoid or use caution with e-stim if you:
Have a pacemaker, implanted defibrillator, or other electrical implant
Are pregnant (especially in the abdominal or pelvic area) without clearance from your provider
Have active bleeding disorders or are taking strong blood thinners
Have epilepsy or a history of seizures
Have severe heart conditions or uncontrolled medical issues
-
The electrical stimulation is usually applied for about 10–25 minutes during a regular acupuncture session.
