My Favorite Chinese Medicine Breakfast Soup

One of the most common things I talk about with patients is breakfast.

Many people are doing their best to eat healthy, but they're starting the day with foods that leave them hungry, craving sugar, or running on caffeine by mid-morning. Smoothies, protein bars, yogurt, cold cereal, and even some "healthy" breakfasts can be difficult for the digestive system to handle—especially if you're already dealing with fatigue, bloating, stress, or digestive inflammation.

In Chinese medicine, we view digestion as the foundation of health. When digestion is strong, we have the ability to transform food into energy, build healthy Blood, and support every other system in the body. That's one reason warm, cooked breakfasts have been recommended for centuries.

This soup is one of my personal favorites. It's simple, satisfying, and full of ingredients that support digestion while providing steady energy throughout the morning. I often recommend meals like this to patients who are working on improving energy, reducing cravings, supporting recovery, or calming inflammation.

Why I Like This Soup

What I love about this combination is that it's both nourishing and easy to digest.

The beef and bone broth provide a rich source of protein and deep nourishment. The daikon and shiitake mushrooms help keep things moving and prevent the meal from feeling heavy. Swiss chard adds minerals and fiber, while miso contributes a savory depth that ties everything together.

The result is a meal that feels grounding without leaving you sluggish.

Instead of a quick spike in energy followed by a crash, this kind of breakfast tends to provide a more steady, sustained source of fuel.

Nourishing Beef, Daikon, and Miso Breakfast Soup

Serves 4

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef

  • 1 medium onion, diced

  • 2 cups daikon radish, peeled and diced

  • 4 ounces shiitake mushrooms, sliced

  • 1 bunch Swiss chard, stems chopped and leaves sliced

  • 6 cups bone broth

  • 2 tablespoons miso paste

  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil or olive oil

  • Sea salt and black pepper to taste

Optional:

  • Green onions

  • Fresh cilantro

  • A small piece of grated ginger

Directions

Heat the oil in a large soup pot over medium heat.

Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks.

Add the onion and cook for several minutes until softened. Stir in the daikon and shiitake mushrooms and cook for another 3 to 5 minutes.

Pour in the bone broth and bring everything to a gentle boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 20 minutes, or until the daikon is tender.

Add the Swiss chard stems and cook for a few minutes, then stir in the leaves and cook until wilted.

Remove the pot from the heat.

In a small bowl, whisk the miso with a ladle of hot broth until smooth. Stir the mixture back into the soup. This helps preserve the flavor and beneficial properties of the miso.

Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

Serve hot.

A Small Shift That Can Make a Big Difference

One of the simplest changes many people can make is replacing a cold breakfast with something warm and nourishing a few times each week.

You don't have to eat soup every morning, but starting the day with foods that are cooked, protein-rich, and easy to digest can make a noticeable difference in energy, cravings, digestion, and overall resilience.

Food doesn't have to be complicated. Sometimes the most therapeutic meals are also the simplest.

This soup is a good reminder of that. It combines a handful of everyday ingredients into something deeply nourishing, satisfying, and supportive of long-term health—the kind of meal that helps you feel steady, grounded, and well-fed before the day even begins.
